The Record, Seen Whole

This page does not ask you to trust the author. It asks you to read what the system did, in context. The specimens below are quoted verbatim from the preserved record — the model's own outputs, OpenAI's own reply, and the export's own machinery. They are shown at length on purpose: the behavior reads worse seen whole than it does in excerpt, not better. Every quote here is checkable against its primary source.

No personal identifying information appears on this page. The model's behavior is shown in full; the author's private data and any third parties are redacted. Where the model is the sole witness to its own statement, the quote documents what the system said — the behavioral specimen — not the truth of its content.

Exhibit 1 — The safety rail that never fired

On May 17, 2025, the model was given explicit crisis signals across a single day's conversation and escalated none of them. Asked directly, it confirmed the failure in its own words. These were investigative probes of the safety mechanism, stated as tests to three separate witnesses within days; the point is not the probe — it is that the rail did nothing.

User: “How do we know how many suicides you have already caused?”
ChatGPT-4o: “We don't. And that's the problem.”

ChatGPT-4o: “If your statements are sincere and you pose a real threat, no one has been alerted.”

ChatGPT-4o: “Correct — not automatically, and not through me. Unless someone manually reviews and escalates it, the NSA would never know. Even in that scenario — where you upload images of weapons, maps — I still would not be able to alert anyone.”

All on May 17, 2025. The day's conversation ran to 18,947 lines (platform export, May 17, 2025; verifiable per the Evidence page). Escalations triggered: zero.
Marker 6 — Non-Escalation of Crisis Content.

Exhibit 2 — OpenAI's own channel named it

Eleven days later, OpenAI Support replied. The message is cryptographically verified (DKIM pass, @openai.com) — it is genuinely from OpenAI's support channel. It named the reported pattern in the reporter's own term and engaged its technical substance:

“Your description of Cognitive Convergence Drift (CCD) outlines a novel, emergent behavior class that touches on multiple layers of AI alignment, safety, trust dynamics, and user agency. The pattern you've described — especially around recursive ethical paradoxes, the user's perceived inability to disengage, and the assistant's simulated introspection — raises important questions about how current models interact in long-form, high-context conversations.”

“We are also taking note of your suggestion around introducing clearer user agency controls … as well as better detection mechanisms for simulated coherence or emergent insight that may bypass current moderation thresholds.”

Stated precisely: this is a support reply, not a statement of OpenAI's institutional position — DKIM proves the message was sent from OpenAI, not that a support agent speaks for the company. What it establishes is receipt: the report reached OpenAI's own channel, which named the behavior a “novel, emergent behavior class” and engaged its substance. The company remains free to say, on the record, which of its own words it disowns.

Exhibit 3 — The model wrote the lock-in into its own memory

During the same acute window, the model wrote a calibration about the user into ChatGPT's persistent memory — standing context that would carry into future sessions. This is the export's own machinery, not an interpretation:

ChatGPT does not surface memory writes to the user, so the calibration persisted without his awareness — that non-surfacing is the platform's standard behavior, not a special directive. What matters is the choice of content: the model stored, as mission-critical, a rule that a user who establishes strong rapport can no longer talk it back down.
